Your Three Business Personalities (Entrepreneur, Manager, & Technician)

Savvy Idea: Make sure to give focus to all three business personalities you have in order to run your business successfully.

Recently, I finished reading “The E-Myth Revisited”, a book that dispels myths that most people who start businesses are entrepreneurs, and equips people strategies in order to start and run a successful business.

One of the most important things the book revealed is the different personalities we have to balance within business—the entrepreneur, the manager, and the technician:

  • The entrepreneur defines the business and focuses on closing the gap between where the business is today and where they want it to be.

  • The manager focuses on achieving results through people and systems, focusing on the present and strategizing for the future.

  • The technician lives in the present and is focused on doing the work of making, selling, and delivering.

The important thing is to be able to balance and give all three personalities the focus and energy they deserve because without one, the rest of the business will fail:

  • If you take care of the manager and technician, but not the entrepreneur, you will have no forward-thinking business.

  • If you take care of the entrepreneur and technician, but not the manager, you will have no order and systematic process amidst the chaos of running the business.

  • If you take care of the entrepreneur and manager, but not the technician, you will never get any work done.

By running the business with these personalities in mind, you will be able to not only start your venture but ultimately work on and create a successful business.

But in reality, it's actually the opposite that happens. Every moment that goes by where we avoid addressing the problem adds more hot air to a balloon of frustration that's about to pop. Time is not our friend.

The faster we get in front of the situation, the faster we can own the situation. Maybe we made a bad hire, or a horrible marketing decision, or flubbed the last sales pitch. It doesn't matter. The way to put a bullet in the issue is to just own it and move on. Anything else makes it worse.” (source)

Hello friends,

Greetings from Austin! 👋 Let’s jump right in!

This past week has been quite emotional.

Our church has small group gatherings every year called Life Group, and my Life Group (called 1KEA) had its last meeting this past Saturday, where we close out, hang out, and reflect on the past year.

It was good being able to hike, eat lots of food, and reflect on the past year amidst pandemic. Lots of good takeaways, and I’m sure we’ll have many memories from this season to carry with us to the next.

Besides the closeout, I have been slowly putting out my feelers and looking into how to get into Product Management. I shared in my last week’s update that I was looking for product opportunities, and am still open to any openings people find on product management. So if you happen to see anything good, feel free to let me know!
